A Japanese distillery mothballed at the end of 2000 now leads the 2026 auction table by brand. Here is its history, the stock that remains and how to read the numbers.

Why Does a Closed Distillery Lead the 2026 Auction Table? Karuizawa Explained

Karuizawa leads a 2026 table of auction brands with $1,799,405 from 20 bottles, just ahead of Macallan on $1,790,698 from 49 bottles, even though the Japanese distillery was mothballed at the end of 2000. One bottle, the 1960 Karuizawa 52 Year Old known as The Prototype, made a $500,000 hammer price at Sotheby's New York on 18 September 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Karuizawa sits first in a year to date auction table with $1,799,405 from 20 bottles, ahead of Macallan with $1,790,698 from 49 bottles.

  • The distillery was mothballed on 31 December 2000, and its remaining inventory of 364 casks went to The Number One Drinks Company, according to Sotheby's. No new old stock can appear.

  • Our own arithmetic shows the gap in value per bottle: about $89,970 for Karuizawa against about $36,545 for Macallan, so a few very high lots carry the brand.

  • The six highest hammer prices of 2026 so far are reported to all belong to Japanese whiskies.

  • Scarcity explains interest, not future prices, and results at the top end swing from month to month.

Tip: Read an auction table as a count of sales, not a forecast. A brand can top the list because of one exceptional bottle, so always check how many lots sit behind the total.

How Did Karuizawa Begin and End?

The start of Karuizawa is dated to 1955, when the company Daikoku Budoshu began building the distillery, with the first spirit running off the still in 1956. Sotheby's places it at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture. In 1962 the owners were absorbed into what became the Mercian Corporation, and the distillery stayed with Mercian.

Sotheby's gives 31 December 2000 as the date the distillery was mothballed, and says the buildings were finally demolished in 2016. Later dates also appear. Some accounts say the distillery was mothballed in 2000 and eventually closed in 2011, and other reports describe 2011 as the year of formal closure. Sources therefore differ on when the site was finished for good, but they agree that regular production stopped around 2000.

Where Did the Last Casks Go?

Kirin Brewing is reported to have bought Mercian and the distillery in 2007, while Sotheby's says only that Mercian was absorbed by Kirin between 2006 and 2010. Marcin Miller of The Number One Drinks Company said that he and a partner tasted 69 cask samples at the distillery, that an offer to buy the distillery was immediately rebuffed, and that he then offered to buy the entire inventory. One timeline places that stock purchase in 2009, while other accounts give 2010 or 2011, so treat the exact year as unsettled.

Sotheby's reports that the remaining inventory was 364 casks, and that the oldest was Cask Nr.5627, filled in 1960. That number is why Karuizawa is described as finite: nobody can fill another cask at the old distillery.

What Is The Prototype, and Why Did It Reach $500,000?

The Prototype is reported to come from Cask Nr.5627, a 250 litre sherry hogshead filled with spirit distilled in 1960. The Sotheby's bottle is a 52 year old single malt at 58.3% ABV, filled into the bottle on 20 December 2012. It carries a black wax seal and a printed Mercian label signed by Karuizawa's last master distiller, along with a handwritten guarantee from Osami Uchibori. Sotheby's estimate was $400,000 to $600,000, and the hammer price of $500,000 landed in the middle.

43 bottles are known from this cask. The Number One Drinks release produced 41, bottled at 51.8% ABV on 1 January 2013, and at that release it was reportedly the oldest Japanese whisky ever released. Another bottle from the same cask sold at Bonhams in Hong Kong in May for $638,007, according to reports. When the same cask appears twice in a year, each result also becomes a reference point for the next.

Does One Bottle Explain the Whole Table?

Not entirely, but it explains a lot. The Prototype's $500,000 hammer price is about 28% of Karuizawa's $1,799,405 year to date total (our own calculation). The table counts 20 bottles for Karuizawa and 49 for Macallan, so the average Karuizawa bottle in the table made about $89,970 against about $36,545 for Macallan. These averages are our own calculation from the published totals, and the table covers the biggest sales rather than every sale.

The table also says nothing about next month. Our earlier piece, Why Are Whisky Auction Prices Falling in 2026?, explained that prices swing, and a brand that leads in September can drop down the list by the end of the year.

Why Does a Closed Distillery Behave Differently From a Working One?

A working distillery keeps filling casks, so new stock keeps arriving. A closed distillery has only what is already in wood or glass, which collectors call a finite supply. Our guide to what a ghost distillery is covers the general idea, and Karuizawa is the deep example.

A new distillery in the town of Karuizawa began production in December 2022. It was built by Karuizawa Whisky Co., whose owner is named as Shigeru Totsuka, and former Karuizawa master distillers Osami Uchibori and Yoshiyuki Nakazato are reported to have been hired. Whisky with the Karuizawa name from the new site is reported to go on sale from 2033. It is a separate company with new spirit, so it does not add to the old stock.

Why Is the Top of the 2026 Table Japanese?

The six highest hammer prices of the year so far are reported to have all been Japanese whiskies. The source does not name them all, so this guide does not either. The year to date table puts Yamazaki third, with $1,344,641 from 4 bottles, which shows how few bottles can carry a brand's total.

For a wider view, our guides on whether Japanese whisky is a good investment in 2026 and on how Yamazaki limited editions have changed look at the producers that are still open.

What Can Buyers Learn From Karuizawa Below the Record Prices?

Most Karuizawa bottles are not The Prototype. The brand sold many single casks over the years, and they carry different names depending on who bottled them. Spiritory lists bottles such as the Karuizawa 15 Years Old 1994 Single Cask Nr.9487, the Karuizawa 17 Years Old 1999 Geisha Label Cask Nr.7436, the Karuizawa 1981 Cocktail Serie Cask Nr.162 and the Karuizawa 1972 Single Cask Number One Drinks Company Cask Nr.7290. There is also the Karuizawa 1999 2000 Vintages Koinobori 3rd.

These names show three things worth checking: the cask number, the vintage and age, and the bottler. A bottle from the distillery's own release is a different object from one by a later bottler. The labelling guidelines of the Japan Spirits and Liqueurs Makers Association are also reportedly far from universally applied, so label details can vary. Each bottle needs its own check.

Tip: With a Karuizawa bottle, compare cask number, bottler name, label design and fill level with a trusted reference before you pay. On Spiritory, all bottles are authenticated from photos by Spiritory's experts before the buyer pays, and nothing here is a promise of rising value.

FAQ

Why does Karuizawa lead the 2026 auction table?

A year to date table shows Karuizawa on $1,799,405 from 20 bottles, ahead of Macallan on $1,790,698 from 49 bottles. A $500,000 hammer price for The Prototype at Sotheby's on 18 September 2026 is about 28% of that total.

When did Karuizawa close?

Production stopped around 2000, and Sotheby's gives 31 December 2000 as the mothballing date. Some accounts say it eventually closed in 2011, and Sotheby's says the site was demolished in 2016. Sources differ on the final closure.

How much Karuizawa whisky is left?

Sotheby's says the remaining inventory sold to The Number One Drinks Company was 364 casks, the oldest being Cask Nr.5627 from 1960. Many bottles have been released since, so the exact amount left is not published.

Is the new Karuizawa distillery making the same whisky?

No. A new distillery began production in December 2022 under Karuizawa Whisky Co., and its whisky is reported to go on sale from 2033. It is separate from the old distillery and its stock.

Is Karuizawa a safe investment?

No outcome is guaranteed. Auction results change from month to month, and a list can be led by one lot. Buy a bottle because you want to own it.
