How Yamazaki Limited Editions moved from yearly blends to cask themed series, from 2014 to the 2026 Refill Spanish Oak release.

Yamazaki Limited Editions From 2014 to 2026: How Has the Series Changed?

Yamazaki Limited Editions began in 2014 as yearly blended bottlings, paused after 2017, returned in 2021 with a Mizunara edition, and have since grown into cask themed series, most recently the 2026 Refill Spanish Oak release. Official suggested prices have since reached US$450 for each 2022 Tsukuriwake bottle and US$7,500 for the 2025 Yamazaki 25 Years Old Mizunara.

Key Takeaways

  • Yamazaki Limited Editions began in 2014, ran in the years to 2017, paused after that and returned in 2021 with a Mizunara edition.

  • The 2016 edition carried no age statement, and the 2014 edition is described by trade listings as a blend of three malts. The 2021 edition used fresh Mizunara casks and carried a suggested price of 8,000 yen.

  • Since 2020 Suntory has also released series built around single cask types, such as the 2020 Yamazaki Edition and the 2022 Tsukuriwake Selection, both at 48%.

  • The newest release, Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak, is reported for the UK on 1 November 2026 and for Japan on 24 November 2026.

  • Names overlap. Limited Edition, Mizunara and Tsukuriwake can be different products, so check the exact name and year on the label.

Tip: Write down the full name and year of any Yamazaki you are considering, such as "Limited Edition 2014" or "Spanish Oak 2022 Edition". Several different bottlings share the same year.

The 2014 to 2016 Editions Were Yearly Blends

Yamazaki Limited Edition appeared as a yearly release from 2014. In May 2016 the blog Time for Whisky described that year's bottling as following "in the footsteps of the 2014 and the 2015 Limited Editions". It noted that the 2016 edition had no age statement, seemed to contain whisky from ex sherry and port casks, and included some malt aged for over 20 years. The Japanese price was 10,000 yen, and the blog expected distribution by lottery, as in the year before.

Retailer and auction listings describe the 2014 edition as a blend of three malts, namely a sherry cask malt and a port cask malt, both aged around 20 years, plus a younger bourbon cask malt, bottled at 43%. Those listings are not Suntory material, so treat the cask detail and the strength as a trade description. You can see this edition on Spiritory as the Yamazaki Limited Edition 2014.

2017 Was the Last Edition Before a Four Year Pause

Time Out Tokyo called the 2021 edition the first Yamazaki limited edition bottle since 2017, which tells us that a 2017 Limited Edition existed and that the yearly run then stopped. Spiritory lists the Yamazaki Limited Edition 2017. We could not confirm the cask make up of that bottle from Suntory or trade press, so we do not describe it here.

Do not confuse it with the Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 edition. The Whiskey Wash reported that bottling as aged for at least 18 years exclusively in Mizunara wood, at 48%, with a price of US$1,000. It is a different product from the Limited Edition of the same year.

2021 Brought the Series Back With Fresh Mizunara Casks

The 2021 Yamazaki Limited Edition was available worldwide from 25 May 2021, according to Time Out Tokyo, at a suggested price of 8,000 yen for 700 ml. Time Out reported that the malts were aged for at least 12 years in Japanese Mizunara oak casks, and Nomunication added that the casks were virgin Mizunara and the strength was 43%.

The change from the 2014 to 2016 blends is clear. Instead of a mix of sherry, port and bourbon cask malts, the 2021 edition put one wood, Japanese oak, at the centre. Mizunara is a theme Suntory kept returning to in the years that followed.

The Tsukuriwake Releases Turned Casks Into Series

Alongside the Limited Editions, Suntory began selling the distillery's building blocks as separate bottles. On 4 November 2020 it released five component bottles as the Yamazaki 2020 Edition series, namely Puncheon, Bordeaux Wine Cask, Spanish Oak, Peated Malt and Mizunara, all at 48%. Nomunication reported that they were available only through wholesalers supplying the on trade, not at retail. Spiritory lists the Yamazaki Spanish Oak 2020 Edition from that run.

In May 2022 Fred Minnick reported that the Yamazaki Limited Edition Tsukuriwake Selection would reach select global markets, including Germany, France, Austria and Spain. It presented the foundational pillars of Yamazaki Single Malt, namely Puncheon, Peated Malt, Spanish Oak and Mizunara, each at 48%. The suggested price was US$450 per bottle, or US$620 for the Mizunara. The Yamazaki Spanish Oak 2022 Edition belongs to this selection.

2023 to 2025 Moved Toward Older Whisky and Higher Prices

In 2023 Suntory marked 100 years of Suntory Whisky. The Whiskey Wash reported the Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara 100th Anniversary Limited Edition at 48%, matured exclusively in Mizunara casks for at least 18 years, in a run of only 2,000 bottles with an original suggested price of US$1,500.

In June 2024 Whisky Advocate covered the House of Suntory 2024 Tsukuriwake series of four malts at 48%. These were Yamazaki Golden Promise and Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt at US$465 each, Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara at US$1,500, and Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt at US$1,200. On 7 August 2025 Suntory announced Yamazaki 25 Years Old Mizunara, which it described as the oldest fully Mizunara aged expression in Yamazaki's history, at 48% and a suggested US$7,500.

Set side by side, the official suggested prices show the direction. A yearly bottling at 8,000 to 10,000 yen has given way to cask themed series and older, much dearer releases.

The 2026 Refill Spanish Oak Release Looks Back at an Old Theme

Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak, reported by The Whiskey Wash on 6 October 2026, is described as a limited edition single malt made from refill Spanish oak casks for 20 markets. The UK date is 1 November 2026 at a price of 215 pounds, and a Japanese report gives 24 November 2026 for Japan. As quoted by The Whiskey Wash, Suntory says the refill cask gives a gentler oak that lets red fruit meet Yamazaki's bright fruit character.

It follows the Spanish oak bottlings of 2020 and 2022 above, but with a different cask idea. Our own guide covers the details in Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak 2026: 7 Things to Know.

How to Read an Edition as a Collector Without Chasing Prices

Start with the story. Each of these releases answers a question Suntory was asking in its own year, from blending old sherry and port casks to isolating a single oak. Knowing that question helps you see why one bottle suits your shelf and another does not.

Then check the practical points. Confirm the exact name, the year, the strength and the market it was made for, and look at the box and label. Bottles from private sellers on Spiritory are authenticated from photos by Spiritory's experts before the buyer pays. Tip: Compare a bottle against the official release details for its own market and year before you buy. Prices quoted for one edition say little about another.

FAQ

When was the first Yamazaki Limited Edition?

The series began in 2014. A 2016 report from Time for Whisky describes the 2016 bottling as following the 2014 and 2015 Limited Editions.

Was there a Yamazaki Limited Edition between 2018 and 2020?

We found no evidence of one. Time Out Tokyo called the 2021 edition the first Yamazaki limited edition bottle since 2017.

What is the difference between a Limited Edition and the Tsukuriwake Selection?

A single Limited Edition, such as the 2021 Mizunara edition, was one bottling. The 2022 Limited Edition Tsukuriwake Selection was a set of expressions, each showing one pillar of Yamazaki single malt, at 48%.

What is new about the 2026 release?

Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak uses Spanish oak casks that have already held whisky. According to The Whiskey Wash, Suntory says this gives a gentler oak influence. The UK date is 1 November 2026 and the Japan date is reported as 24 November 2026.
