Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026 Opens a Five Year Series Leading to 2030

A Five Year Series to 2030

Nikka has launched Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026, the first release in a limited annual series that will run until 2030, the 30th anniversary of the Taketsuru Pure Malt brand.

Taketsuru Pure Malt was created in 2000 as a tribute to Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky. Each Essentials edition will explore a different part of its identity and carry its own label.

Yoichi and Its Coal Fired Stills

The 2026 edition is dedicated to the Yoichi Distillery on Hokkaido, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934 and the birthplace of Nikka. It highlights the direct coal fired distillation that has been practised there since the distillery opened.

Coal is still fed into the furnaces beneath Yoichi's pot stills. Nikka describes the method as "now exceptionally rare, even in Scotland" and credits it with creating "deep and structured whiskies".

Malts From the Year 2000

Like every Taketsuru Pure Malt, Essentials 2026 brings together malt whiskies from Yoichi and from Miyagikyo, the distillery near Sendai that Nikka opened in 1969. This edition includes whiskies from both distilleries distilled in 2000, the year Taketsuru Pure Malt first appeared.

Nikka says the blend combines "Yoichi's powerful, smoky and structured character" with "Miyagikyo's finesse, roundness and fruity notes". It is bottled at 43% ABV, the same strength as the original Taketsuru Pure Malt, and its label is dominated by traditional Japanese indigo blue, the signature colour of Yoichi Single Malt.

Official Tasting Notes

Nose: malty and gently toasty, with subtle notes of baked cookies, sweet and tart nuances reminiscent of apricot jam and a calm, well matured oak presence.

Palate: full bodied and rich. The natural sweetness of malt is integrated with the depth of peat, revealing a layered palate with quiet complexity.

Finish: pleasant and lingering. Malt sweetness continues gently, with soft peat notes and a subtle, slightly bitter oak nuance.

Availability

In Europe, Essentials 2026 is available in limited quantities in a 70cl bottle through La Maison du Whisky boutiques, specialist retailers and whisky.fr, at a recommended price of €180. In the United States, it is limited to 1,200 bottles at a suggested retail price of $249.99.

The release is listed on Spiritory as Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026.
