The raw spirit is then filled into oak barrels and matured for at least three years, but often much longer. The maturation process gives the whisky its color and much of its flavor. Bushmills 30 Years Old Whiskey is a fantastic single malt which, as the name suggests, has been matured for at least 30 years. It is made from 100% malted barley and has been triple distilled. The elaborate maturation process initially took place in Oloroso sherry butts, followed by 14 years in ex-bourbon barrels, followed by a further 16 years in first-fill Pedro Ximénez casks. The 30 is strictly limited and Master Distiller Alex Thomas describes it as syrupy toffee on the nose, velvety smooth with sultanas, figs, cloves and orange peel on the palate and a long, complex finish of dried fruit and toffee. This whisky from Ireland is a must for connoisseurs.

### Teeling Blackpitts

Investors need to turn to alternative investments in these turbulent markets in the search for alpha. Many alternative investments have stringent barriers to entry and absorbent fees to invest in them. 

Fee terms like 2 and 20, 2% flat management fee applied to all assets under management and 20% performance fee, slice deeply into any potential profit margins. Where can you turn for added alpha without these typical fee structures and low barriers to entry? 

**Whisky**, direct investment in bottles of rare whisky. That’s right, investing in whisky can be a great way to diversify your portfolio, add alpha with little correlation to the stock markets, and whisky has low barriers to entry.

## Investing in Whisky vs. Stocks

Over the past 10 years, [rare whisky has returned 564%  as of 2021](https://www.tradingandinvestmentnews.co.uk/alternative-investments/rare-whisky-investments-return-600-in-10-years/), according to the [Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index](https://www.knightfrank.com/wealthreport/), a benchmark for rare whiskies. This translates to a year over year return of roughly 18.9% over the past decade. 

For context, the S&P 500 index returned only 340% over this same time period. For a year over year [average return](https://www.thewhiskeyinvestor.com/average-whiskey-investment-returns/) of around 14.4%. Not only did whisky outpace the S&P 500, it also outperformed other alternative investments such as fine wine , art, vintage cars, coins and stamps over this ten-year period.

While these returns are outstanding, let’s dig a little deeper into the benchmark. The Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index measures the price movements of 3.3% of available [Scotch whiskies](https://spiritory.com/skus?spiritory_prod%5Bquery%5D=cotch%20whisky), 100 of them. There are over 3,000 Scotch whiskies made, therefore the price of all Scotch whiskies did not move 5.6x over the ten-year period, the price of 100 of them did. Some could have moved more, others less. On a positive sidenote, a sub-index of Japanese whisky appreciated even more than the Scotch whisky index.

With investors seeking new opportunities in this post-pandemic world, they have bolstered the whisky markets as of late. According to research, the global whisky market had an estimated worth of nearly $58 billion dollars in 2021. With around a 6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the total whisky market is estimated to be around $85 billion by 2026. Which adds up to added opportunity for investors. 

Better yet, the market is not being driven by a very few top-end bottles on the market. The middle market, bottles in the hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars, are driving whisky prices northward.

The popularity of whisky as a beverage is growing, and collectors from China and India are further driving demand, especially the premium and super-premium classes. Therefore, these investment-classes are growing and driving the CAGR as 91% of the growth is driven by these two categories, according to Statista.</div>

Another interesting nugget is Millennials are not the biggest consumers of whisky. They tend to consumer less than other groups but consume higher quality whiskies when they do indulge, which, given the scarcity of premium brands also drives the price.

## Scarcity 

While rare whisky markets and auctions are constantly shifting, bottles of rare whisky are scarce. Like fine wine, old, rare whisky is a dwindling resource. Each barrel or cask of whisky is unique unto itself, it cannot be reproduced. Once it is consumed it is gone forever. The more each of these rare releases of whisky is consumed, the price goes up automatically. Reduce supply equals an increase in demand. Additionally, production capacities cannot be increased in the near term. 

A 30-year-old whisky  was produced and put into cask 30 years ago. The whisky aged in this cask for 30 years and can only be bottled one time. You cannot go back and tap into this cask because it has been fully bottled. To produce a similar 30-year-old whisky, it too will have to undergo the timely and costly production and cask aging process.

While there are new releases of rare whisky annually, the older bottles become more scare due to consumption. Not all collectors of whisky buy them for a profit, they enjoy drinking them.

How rare can whiskies be? Well, in 1926, Macallan, a Scotch producer from Speyside, filled a sherry seasoned cask with Macallan spirit. 60 years later, they finally bottle the cask and filled just 40 bottles. In May 2021, a bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926  60-year-old sold for $1.1 million. 

It is unclear how many of the other 39 bottles are still in existence today.

A few other recent auctions prices are a Hanyu - 2000 Single Cash #9500 Ichiro’s Malt - Card 2 of Clubs Japanese whisky sold for $23,455, another Japanese whisky [Yamazaki](https://spiritory.com/skus?spiritory_prod%5Bquery%5D=Yamazaki) -25th Anniversary 1984 sold for $12,345, an [Ardbeg](https://spiritory.com/skus?spiritory_prod%5Bquery%5D=Ardbeg) - 1975 Singe Cask #1375 Islay, Scotch Whisky sold for $3,086, while a Macallan -50-Year-Old - The Red Collection sold for $46,293.

## Liquidity 

While scarcity is a positive attribute of upward price movement, investing in whisky does not have the volatility of the stock markets. As we know, there are many things that contribute to the volatility and price movements in the stock markets. 

When investing in the stock markets, not only are you contending with the financial performance of the underlying stock you are investing in; you also have to worry about economic data, algorithm trading programs, the pundits on CNBC, the Reddit trading crowd piling in and buying puts on specific stocks, and platforms like Robinhood working against you.

When investing in whisky, you have none of these external factors. You buy your bottles either directly from the distiller or auction, then store them properly like you would fine wine, and sell when ready. Whisky is also a long-term investment. While sometimes you can flip your whisky upon purchasing it, you will be more likely to hold the assets for 5-7 years or longer, before offloading them.

## Long Run Benefit of Investing in Whisky

There are many long-run benefits of investing in whisky. We outlined a few of them in the liquidity versus scarcity  section above. Of course, things happen. Corks can leak or become damaged, air can get into the bottle, funky smells and mold can penetrate the cork if not stored properly and glass bottles break, but mostly whisky does not go bad.

 Unlike wine, whisky does not continue to age once placed into bottles. Whisky only ages while it is in the oak casks. Bottles should be stored upright, away from direct sunlight and away from mold and damp areas. You will want to store your whisky at a lower temperature than typical room temperature to keep the corks in good working condition.

Another long run benefit of investing in whisky is, you don’t have to worry about vintage conditions with whisky like you will when investing in investment grade wines. Whisky production does not have the same risks of harvest yields, temperature, and rain concerns, and all the rest that wine does.

When it comes to whiskey, there are only a few countries that have the same caliber of production. Kentucky, Scotland, Ireland, Japan, and Canada are the only countries in the world that produce whiskey. Japan is the only country that produces both whisky and shochu. They also have a wide variety of whiskeys, from the traditional Japanese whiskey, to a Japanese whiskey mixed with a Japanese plum liqueur.

## History of Japanese Whisky 

Japanese Whisky is a type of whisky that is produced in Japan. The history of Japanese whisky is a long and interesting one. It is said that the first distillation of whisky in Japan was in 1869. Since then, the history of Japanese whisky has been a long and interesting one.

Japanese whisky has a long and illustrious history, although much of it is hidden in obscurity. Japanese whiskies were being made before the famous Suntory Yamazaki Distillery was founded in the early 20th century, though very little is known about them. We do know that a few shochu and sake breweries produced Japanese whisky on the side.

Whisky took a historical turn in Japan in 1923, when Suntory established the first official whisky distillery.

The first Japanese whisky distillery was founded by [Masataka Taketsuru](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masataka_Taketsuru), who studied the art of whisky making in Scotland. He then returned to Japan establishing a whisky distillery at [Suntory](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suntory).

Taketsuru's Japanese whiskies were so successful that he eventually went on to found the Nikka Whisky Company.

From 1927, the Japanese whisky industry went through a golden age. The Japanese whisky industry was then in the hands of the large distillers. During the Second World War, the Japanese whisky industry faced many difficulties.  The Japanese whisky industry was able to make a comeback in the late 1950s.

## How to choose a Japanese whisky 

Not all whiskies labeled as "Japanese Whisky" are, in fact, 100 percent Japanese. The country had no legal standards that define "Japanese whisky," so some Japanese whiskies are, in fact, blends of whisky from Scotland, Canada, and other countries.

The combination of such high taxes and low duties on alcohol has allowed Japanese spirits companies to import Scotch, Canadian, and other foreign whisky for blending — either to improve the product or to make it more affordable.

Now, the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association has stepped in to create a rudimentary definition of "Japanese Whisky," while not blaming previous generations of their predecessors.

[In an announcement in 2021](http://www.yoshu.or.jp/statistics_legal/legal/pdf/independence_09.pdf), they cited the common practice in Scotland of trading whiskies between distilleries for blending purposes as the original justification for the practice in Japan.

The new standards took effect on April 1, 2021 and require any whisky labeled as “Japanese Whisky” to be mashed, fermented, distilled, matured, and bottled in Japan. However, existing products will be allowed to remain on the market until March 31, 2024.

The industry's standards are based on self-regulation and have no legal status in Japanese law. However, most of the major whisky producers in Japan, including Suntory and Nikka, are members of the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association.

### So how is it made? 

Like Scotch, Japanese whisky relies heavily on malted barley (often peated and even imported from Scotland) that’s mashed and distilled twice in pot stills, yielding more residual congeners (which it’s up to the distiller to incorporate, or cut, skillfully).

Other (column-distilled) grain whiskies may be blended in, if it’s a single malt. And, like Scotch, Japanese whisky is wood-aged, sometimes in American oak, sometimes in Sherry casks, and sometimes in Japanese Mizunara oak, which imparts unique characteristics (think citrus, spice, incense).

### How can japanese whisky be classified? 
There are different ways to classify Japanese whisky. 

* First, the classification system is based on "five main types of Japanese whisky":
* Single Malt: Single malts are made from malted barley and are unblended.
* Single Grain: Single grains are made from a single type of grain.
* Blended Malt: Blended malts are made from malted barley and malted barley, and are blended with other grains.
* Blended Grain: Blended grains are made from malted barley, malted barley, and other grains.
* Blended Malt and Grain: Blended malts and grains are made from malted barley, malted barley, and other grains.

Japanese whiskies can also be classified by their production method. The two methods are pot still and column still.

Pot still whisky is a type of whisky that is made using a pot still. Pot stills are used to produce a more flavorful whisky than what is produced by a column still.

Column still whisky is a type of whisky that is made using a column still. Column stills are used to produce a less flavorful whisky than what is produced by a pot still.

Whiskies from Japan can also be divided into regions. The most famous Japanese whisky region is Hokkaido, home to the Nikka Whisky Company. Other Japanese whisky regions include Kyushu and Honshu. Each region has its own unique climate and terroir, which imparts different flavors to the whiskies produced there.

Japanese whiskies can also be classified by their distiller. The three largest types of distillers are Suntory, Nikka, and Yamazaki.

## How to Choose a Japanese Whisky 
Now that you know a little bit more about Japanese whisky, it’s time to learn how to choose a Japanese whisky.

When choosing a Japanese whisky, the first thing to keep in mind is that they can be made from any type of grain, but the most common grains used are wheat, rye, and barley.

Japanese whiskies are typically distilled twice and aged in wooden barrels for at least three years. Japanese whiskies can be classified by their production method, type of grain used, region of production, or distiller.

When choosing a Japanese whisky, there are three main factors to consider: price, flavor, and occasion.

### Price
Japanese whiskies can range in price from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. The price of a Japanese whisky will depend on the age, type, and distiller of the whisky.

### Flavor 
Japanese whiskies can be divided into three flavor categories: sweet, smoky, and dry.
Sweet Japanese whiskies are typically made with sherry cask aging, while smoky Japanese whiskies are typically made with peated barley.
Dry Japanese whiskies are typically made without any added flavors.
