The Maltman Launches Excalibur: 50cl Single Malt Series
The Maltman Launches “Excalibur” Series in 0.5-Liter Single Malt Bottles
Aultmore 17 Years Old 2009 Excalibur The Maltman 50 cl Longmorn 17 Years Old 2008 Excalibur The Maltman 50 cl Miltonduff 11 Years Old 2015 Excalibur The Maltman 50 cl Caol Ila 10 Years Old 2015 Excalibur The Maltman 50 cl mark the debut of The Maltman's new “Excalibur” label, offering classic Scottish single malts in a convenient 500ml format. Independent bottlers Donald and Andy Hart, known for the Meadowside Blending house, position this series as an accessible counterpart to their well-regarded Maltman line, retaining core quality traits like natural color, cask strength, and no chill filtration. The Excalibur launch addresses a growing demand for smaller bottle formats and more affordable price points.
Maturation & Flavor Profile
The initial release features four distinct cask maturations:
• Aultmore 17 Years Old 2009, matured in a sherry hogshead
• Longmorn 17 Years Old 2008, aged in bourbon barrels
• Miltonduff 11 Years Old 2015, matured in sherry hogsheads
• Caol Ila 10 Years Old 2015, aged in first-fill bourbon barrels
All four expressions are bottled around 49.2% ABV (Longmorn slightly higher at 49.5%), emphasizing robust character and aroma profiles without added coloring or chill filtration.
Tasting Notes
• Aultmore 17 Years Old: Fruity notes mingle with salted pecans, cinnamon, and apple pie nuances.
• Longmorn 17 Years Old: Gentle oak leads into orchard fruits, vanilla, caramel tart, and hints of ginger.
• Miltonduff 11 Years Old: Rich impressions of chocolate-covered raisins, honeysuckle, and candied apple.
• Caol Ila 10 Years Old: Sweet peat aromas combine with citrus notes, rigging, and dark salty chocolate.
Master Blender's Statement
Donald Hart explains, “Excalibur—previously reserved for rare old blends—is now a consumer-friendly brand with 50cl bottles at a comfortable price. We maintain natural color, non-chill filtration, and around 49.2% strength, an ideal drinking strength. Each single cask is selected by aroma, mouthfeel, taste, and finish to uphold our high-quality standards. This series complements our Maltman range by offering single cask single malts that are more accessible.”
