Strathisla 21 Years Old 2005 Vintage: The Heart of Chivas Regal at Cask Strength

The malt behind the blend

Anyone who drinks Chivas Regal also drinks Strathisla, since the malt from Keith is regarded as the heart of the blend. Under its own label, in our view, it appears far less often. That makes Strathisla 21 Years Old 2005 Vintage Edition, now released by Chivas Brothers in the Distillery Reserve Exclusives collection, all the more interesting.

The key facts: distilled in 2005, matured for 21 years in first fill European oak sherry butts, 60% ABV at natural cask strength, non chill filtered, 70cl. The price is around €353 (£295), and engraving costs around €12 (£10) extra. Online sales opened on 5 November at 11:59 UK time and run while stocks last. We have no bottle count.

What the official notes promise

On the nose, the distillery names rich dried fruits such as sultanas, dates and stewed plums, along with orange marmalade and sweet cranberry, then caramel, dark chocolate, toasted nuts, cinnamon and clove. The palate brings dates, cherries and marmalade, soft toffee and demerara sugar, finished with a dusting of cocoa and aromatic oak spice. The finish is long and rich, with dried fruit, citrus and warming spice.

In our view, that reads like a whisky in which the cask sets the tone, which is no surprise after 21 years in first fill sherry wood.

Why first fill matters

A 21 year old is nothing new for Strathisla: one appeared in 2024 from a second fill sherry butt at 61.8% ABV. In our view, one major difference is the cask, as a first fill sherry cask usually gives a whisky more colour, sweetness and spice.

A comparison within the Vintage Editions is worthwhile too. Strathisla 15 Years Old 2007 Vintage Edition came in at 62.3% ABV, while the new one, with six more years in wood, reaches 60%. It remains a strong whisky. In our view it is worth tasting neat first, then with a few drops of water.

Two pagodas and a long history

The distillery was founded in 1786, originally under the name Milltown, and its two pagoda roofs make it one of the most photographed in Scotland. The label calls it the oldest working distillery in the Highlands. Chivas Brothers took over in 1950, and Strathisla has been regarded as the spiritual home of Chivas Regal ever since.
