Scotch and Indian Malt Whisky: The Associations Agree to Cooperate

The agreement

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) and the Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) signed a cooperation agreement on 21 October 2026. The signing took place at The Imperial Hotel in New Delhi, with Scotland's First Minister John Swinney present.

It was signed by Major General (retd) Dr Rajesh Chopra, director general of the IMWA, and Ian Duddy, international director of the SWA.

What it covers

The associations plan to exchange information, knowledge and practices, including on sustainability and regulatory matters. The agreement also covers legal protection, product authenticity, intellectual property infringements and the promotion of responsible consumption.

Chopra calls the agreement an important milestone in the evolution of India's malt whisky industry. Duddy says the agreement will help the SWA's work to promote a clear definition of single malt whisky in India.

The background: the trade deal

The trade deal between India and the UK has been in force since 15 July 2026. It cut India's import tariff on Scotch from 150 to 75 percent, and the tariff is set to reach 40 percent in the tenth year.

Scotch exports to India were worth around €342 million (£286 million) in 2025.

Who is behind the Indian association

The IMWA was founded on 8 July 2024 and officially launched on 20 March 2025. Its members include Amrut Distilleries, John Distilleries, Radico Khaitan, Piccadilly Agro, Diageo India and Alcobrew. According to the association, together they account for more than 75 percent of malt whisky production revenue in India.

Earlier in 2026 the association introduced a hologram that identifies Indian single malts meeting the required standards.

Whiskies from these houses are also found on Spiritory, such as the Amrut Fusion, the Paul John Nirvana, the Rampur Barrel Blush and the Indri Agneya.
