Glengoyne 17 Years Old Scottish Oak, a New Virgin Oak Release

Glengoyne 17 Years Old Scottish Oak, a New Virgin Oak Release
A New 17 Year Old in the Scottish Oak Series
Glengoyne has a new single malt in its Scottish Oak series. The Glengoyne 17 Years Old Scottish Oak is a 17 year old whisky finished in virgin Scottish oak and bottled at 51.6% ABV in a 700 ml bottle. It is a 2026 addition to a series in which the cask wood itself is the defining feature of the whisky.
Why Scottish Oak Is a Rare Cask Wood
Scottish oak is one of the least common woods in whisky production. The trees grow slowly and yield fewer usable staves than the American oak that dominates Scotch maturation, which keeps the number of new Scottish oak casks small. This release is finished in virgin Scottish oak, a cask that has not previously held whisky, so the fresh wood contributes a pronounced influence to the spirit.
Spirit Gold Outstanding at the IWSC
The release already carries a notable competition result. At the 2026 International Wine & Spirit Competition, the Glengoyne 17 Years Old Scottish Oak received the Spirit Gold Outstanding Award with a score of 98 points. The IWSC assigns the Spirit Gold Outstanding tier to whiskies that score 95 points or above, placing this bottling in the competition's top scoring bracket. An earlier news article on this release covered the whisky's award and its virgin oak finish.
The Release's Place in the Glengoyne Range
The 17 Years Old Scottish Oak extends the distillery's recent run of wood led releases. It follows the Glengoyne 16 Years Old Mizunara Oak, which joined the lineup at the end of 2025, as the second expression built around an uncommon cask wood. Single cask bottlings sit alongside them, including the Glengoyne 15 Years Old Cask Nr. 1013, the Glengoyne 2004 The Distillery Cask Nr.31 12 Years Old, and the Glengoyne 2005 The Distillery Cask Nr.3550 17 Years Old. The Scottish Oak release is the most recent of these additions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Glengoyne 17 Years Old Scottish Oak fit into the distillery's range?
It is one of two recent Glengoyne releases built around an uncommon cask wood, joining the 16 Years Old Mizunara Oak, and it sits alongside single cask bottlings such as the 15 Years Old Cask Nr. 1013 and the two Distillery Cask releases.
Why is Scottish oak so rarely used in whisky production?
Scottish oak grows slowly and yields fewer usable staves than American oak, so new Scottish oak casks are scarce. The 17 Years Old is finished in virgin Scottish oak, a cask that has not previously held whisky, making the new wood the defining influence on the spirit.
