Glenfiddich 28 Years Old Aston Martin: Old Malt Meets Virgin Oak

A 28 year old for January

Glenfiddich and Aston Martin unveiled Glenfiddich 28 Years Old Aston Martin in New York on 4 November. The single malt is bottled at 43.7% ABV in a 70cl bottle. The suggested price in the US is around €798 ($899). Neither brand has given a bottle count.

Sales begin in January 2027, nationwide in the US and in global travel retail. Outside the US, the whisky will only be available there. The airports where the launch is to be supported include London Heathrow and Frankfurt.

Three routes through the oak

The casks were filled in the late 1990s. Part of the whisky matured first in American oak and then in virgin American oak, which Glenfiddich says adds deep spice and vanilla sweetness. Malt Master Brian Kinsman combined it with whisky from European oak hogsheads seasoned with Oloroso sherry. Traditional ex bourbon casks bring in the house's orchard fruit.

"Working with highly active casks gave me the opportunity to explore how different layers of oak influence could come together, while preserving the vibrant fruit notes synonymous with Glenfiddich," says Kinsman.

Honest notes for oak lovers

Our impression is that most blenders are careful with active wood in very old whiskies, as too much oak is a real risk after decades. That Kinsman explicitly chooses highly active casks is what makes this release interesting to us. The official notes do not gloss over it either: creamy toffee, vanilla shortcake and cotton candy on the nose, strong oak tannin balanced by delicate vanilla sweetness on the palate, and a very oaky finish with a tangy warming spice.

A brand's description rarely reads this openly. If you are looking for soft, fruity Glenfiddich maturity, the notes suggest you may not find it here. If you enjoy powerful wood in the glass, that is exactly why you might be curious.

Back to the 1990s

Earlier whiskies from the partnership that we list on Spiritory, such as the 16 year old, the 19 year old, the 48 year old from 1977 and the 65 year old from 1959, carry the name of the Formula One team. The new one names only Aston Martin in its title, and in our view its story leads more to the road cars: when the casks were filled, the carmaker was working on the Project Vantage concept car, which later became the basis for the Vanquish.

Aston Martin's designers also worked on the packaging, with Podium Green, copper details and Glenfiddich's stag. Glenfiddich 28 Years Old Aston Martin has its own page on Spiritory, where you can place a bid.
