From Málaga to Ireland: Redbreast unveils the Moscatel Wine Cask Edition

The fifth release in the acclaimed Redbreast Iberian Series

Redbreast Irish Whiskey expands its celebrated Iberian Series with the launch of the Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition, a new limited edition that bridges southern Spain and Ireland. Created by Master Blender David McCabe, this release highlights Redbreast’s iconic Single Pot Still Irish whisky, bringing a distinctly Mediterranean influence to the range. Bottled at 46% ABV, the Moscatel Wine Cask Edition introduces a brighter, citrus-led elegance while staying true to Redbreast’s rich and layered house style.

Design and presentation

While remaining faithful to Redbreast’s recognizable branding, the Moscatel Wine Cask Edition subtly signals its Iberian inspiration. The presentation reflects the warmth and heritage of southern Spain, underlining the whisky’s journey from Málaga to Midleton and its place within the award-winning Iberian Series.

The maturation process is central to this release. The whisky is initially aged in a combination of former American whiskey barrels and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, before undergoing a final **16-month finish in Málaga Moscatel wine casks** from the historic **Bodegas Quitapenas**. These European oak hogsheads were seasoned with Moscatel wine for two years in Spain before being filled at the Midleton Distillery, resulting in a whisky rich in sun-kissed sweetness and aromatic depth.

Maturation, flavour profile and tasting notes

Decades-long relationships with Iberian coopers and winemakers underpin this edition, continuing a legacy built by David McCabe and his predecessor Billy Leighton. The influence of Moscatel wine brings a refined aromatic profile that complements the spice-driven character of Single Pot Still whisky.

Tasting notes:

  • Mandarin and orange peel with floral chamomile notes
  • Layers of vanilla, honey, and glazed fruits
  • Black pepper and clove adding classic pot still spice and structure

Master Blender David McCabe notes: “This edition celebrates the craftsmanship and tradition of Redbreast dating back to the late 1800s. The Moscatel casks honour our historic connections to sherry and liqueur wines, and the people behind them, such as Marta and her family at Bodegas Quitapenas.” Marta Suárez Prieto adds that the casks contribute “notes of honey, dates, caramelised fruits, and fine herbal and citrus accents.” Priced at an RRP of €78 in Germany, the Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition stands out as a significant and expressive addition to the Iberian Series for whisky enthusiasts and collectors alike.
