Arran 13-Year James Hutton Edition: A Deep Time Tribute

Celebrating James Hutton’s Legacy with Arran’s Geologist Release

Arran 13 Years Old James Hutton Institute Limited Edition marks a special tribute from the Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran, commemorating the 300th birthday of James Hutton, the pioneering geologist who fundamentally changed our understanding of Earth’s history. This limited edition single malt embodies Hutton’s spirit of deep time and natural progression, blending heritage and maturation craft in one bottle.

Maturation & Flavor Profile

This 13-year-old whisky spent its first 6 years aging in Bourbon barrels before a 7-year finish in Australian Cabernet Sauvignon casks. The unusual cask combination imparts a unique profile, balancing fresh orchard and red berry fruits with a refined oak spice influence from the wine casks.

Aged with patience, this dram reflects the complexity of geological time.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh citrus, baked apple, and vanilla cream with ripe red berries, blackcurrant, and sweet oak spice from the Australian Cabernet Sauvignon cask.
Palate: Soft, rounded orchard fruits, honeyed malt, creamy vanilla, layered with dark cherry, cassis, gentle cinnamon, and delicate oak tannins.
Finish: Long and elegant, lingering red fruits, sweet spice, and candied orange peel fading into a warming finish.

Master Blender's Statement

Managing Director Euan Mitchell comments:
“This Arran Single Malt is our tribute to a man whose ideas changed how we understand the world around us. The concept of ‘Deep Time’ resonates strongly with whisky making, where patience, maturation, and natural processes are everything.”

Arran 13 Years Old James Hutton Institute Limited Edition is strictly limited to 300 bottles and priced at £87.50. This collector’s single malt is available exclusively through Spiritory, representing a sophisticated homage to James Hutton’s enduring influence on science and whisky alike.
