Macallan has built six distinct limited edition series over the years. The Edition series ran six annual collaborations from 2015 to 2020. Masters of Photography has paired bottlings with photographers since 2008. The Harmony Collection changes the whisky itself around a theme each year, from 2021's Rich Cacao to the coconut chapter that closed the series in 2026. The Red Collection, launched in 2020, holds Macallan's oldest standing age statements. Fine and Rare, running since 2002, is built from single cask vintages dated back to 1926. TIME : SPACE, the newest collection, opened in 2024 and continues with the new release, Sherry Cask.

6 Macallan Limited Edition Series Collectors Should Know

The six Macallan limited edition series collectors should know are the Edition series (2015 to 2020), Masters of Photography (since 2008), the Harmony Collection (since 2021), the Red Collection (since 2020), Fine and Rare (since 2002) and TIME : SPACE (since 2024). Each series changes something different, a blend, a photographer, a whole recipe or simply the age statement, so knowing which is which matters more than the series name on the box.

Key Takeaways

  • The Edition series ran six annual releases, No.1 in 2015 through No.6 in 2020, each shaped by a different guest collaborator.

  • Masters of Photography pairs a Macallan bottling with a working photographer's images, running since 2008 through editions with Rankin, Albert Watson and others.

  • The Harmony Collection changes the whisky itself around a theme each year, running since 2021 through the coconut chapter that closed the series in 2026.

  • The Red Collection, launched in 2020, holds Macallan's oldest standing age statements, from 40 Years Old to releases well past 70 years.

  • Fine and Rare is Macallan's largest vintage collection, individually selected single cask whiskies dated from 1926 onward, assembled since 2002.

  • TIME : SPACE is the newest collection, opening in 2024 and continuing with the new release, Sherry Cask.

Tip: Before buying into any Macallan limited series, check what actually changed for that release, the whisky, the cask or only the packaging, since the answer differs by series and affects how the bottle compares with Macallan's standard range.

The Edition Series Ran Six Collaborations From 2015 to 2020

The Edition series was Macallan's first yearly limited release built around a different collaborator each time, rather than a single vintage or age statement. Macallan released Edition No.1 in 2015 and closed the series with Edition No.6 in autumn 2020.

  • Edition No.1 (2015) was selected by Macallan's master blenders from eight different cask types across European and American oak, and launched first in Taiwan and the United States.

  • Edition No.2 (2016) paired whisky maker Bob Dalgarno with the Roca brothers of El Celler de Can Roca, sourcing sherry seasoned casks from four Spanish bodegas.

  • Edition No.3 (2017) was composed with master perfumer Roja Dove, built around orange oil, apricot and green apple notes.

  • Edition No.4 (2018) marked the opening of Macallan's new distillery that year, packaged in green to echo its turf covered roof.

  • Edition No.5 (2019) worked with the Pantone Color Institute to connect the whisky's colour to its cask makeup.

  • Edition No.6 (2020) closed the series with a landscape theme, developed with whisky maker Steven Bremner alongside a partnership with the Atlantic Salmon Trust.

Unlike Masters of Photography, described next, the Edition series changed the blend itself every year rather than pairing an existing bottling with outside artwork. Edition No.1 and Edition No.6 are the opening and closing bottles of the set. Masters of Photography Pairs a Bottling With a Working Photographer

Masters of Photography began in 2008, when Macallan invited photographer Rankin to Easter Elchies House and paired his work with a bottling of Macallan Fine Oak 30 Years Old. Rankin shot more than 2,000 Polaroids on the estate, and each of the 1,000 bottles in that release carried a label and an original Polaroid matched to it.

Photographer Albert Watson followed in December 2010, working with Macallan Sherry Oak 20 Years Old across 1,000 bottles, each including a set of ten portfolio prints. Later editions paired further bottlings with photographers Annie Leibovitz, Elliott Erwitt, Mario Testino and Steven Klein. The Magnum Edition in 2018 brought together six photographers from the Magnum Photos agency, Steve McCurry, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Mark Power, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Alec Soth, in a release of 2,000 bottles marking the opening of Macallan's new distillery.

The whisky across Masters of Photography editions has generally been an existing Macallan expression rather than a new recipe. What changes is the photographer, the artwork on the label and box, and the prints or book that come with it. The Rankin edition and the Magnum edition bookend the series so far, ten years and seven editions apart.

The Harmony Collection Changes the Whisky Around a Theme Each Year

The Harmony Collection differs from the two series above because the whisky itself changes with every release, not only the packaging or artwork. Macallan launched the series in 2021 with Rich Cacao, made with pastry chef Jordi Roca and chocolatier Damien Allsop and bottled at 44% ABV in a box made from discarded cacao husks.

Later chapters moved through coffee with Inspired by Intense Arabica, then through themes built around oak and tea, before closing with a coconut theme in 2026. That final chapter arrived as two expressions, Inspired by Fresh Coconut and Inspired by Toasted Coconut, both drawing their coconut character naturally from lactones in the American oak casks used to mature them, rather than from any added flavouring. Read the full tasting notes in The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Fresh Coconut.

The Red Collection Holds Macallan's Oldest Standing Age Statements

Macallan launched The Red Collection in October 2020 with six age stated single malts sold as an ongoing range rather than a one off release: 40 Years Old, 50 Years Old, 60 Years Old, 71 Years Old, 74 Years Old and 78 Years Old. Each bottle is presented in a hand crafted box made from European oak, the same wood Macallan uses for its casks, and a limited set of labels were designed by Spanish artist Javi Aznarez around three figures from the distillery's history, founder Alexander Reid, proprietor Roderick Kemp and former chairman Allan Shiach.

The collection has continued to grow since its launch, with additional ultra aged bottlings added in the years since as older stock becomes available. What sets The Red Collection apart from the rest of Macallan's range is simply age. These are the oldest whiskies the distillery sells as standing, officially bottled expressions, rather than single cask vintage bottlings.

Fine and Rare Is the Largest Single Distillery Vintage Collection

Macallan launched Fine and Rare in 2002 with the aim of assembling the largest collection of vintage dated single malt whiskies ever released by one distillery. The collection has grown since to around 60 releases, spanning vintages from 1926 to 2000. Each cask is chosen individually by Macallan's whisky makers and hand bottled at Easter Elchies at cask strength, without chill filtration or added colouring, once it is judged to be at its peak.

The most publicised bottling in the collection comes from the 1926 vintage, Cask Nr.263. A bottle from that cask carrying the Fine and Rare label sold for £1.5 million at Sotheby's in 2019, a world record price for any bottle of wine or spirit at auction at the time. A different label from the same cask, designed by artist Valerio Adami, went on to sell for £2,187,500 in 2023. The most recent addition to the series is the 2000 vintage, a 24 Years Old, released for Macallan's 200th anniversary.

TIME : SPACE Is the Newest Collection, Built on Macallan's Own Casks

TIME : SPACE opened in 2024 for Macallan's 200th anniversary with two releases. TIME : SPACE itself is a dual chamber vessel pairing an 84 Years Old whisky distilled in 1940 with a 2018 vintage from the distillery's newest site, limited to 200 bottles worldwide. TIME : SPACE Mastery followed in the same year, a whisky without an age statement built from 14 cask types and bottled at 43.6% ABV in a circular decanter.

The new release is TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask, a 20 Years Old bottled at 44.8% ABV. It is the only whisky in Macallan's range built entirely from sherry seasoned casks supplied by Valdespino, the Jerez bodega Macallan now part owns, using casks filled during the 2024 bicentenary. The move follows Macallan buying stakes in its own cask supply chain between 2023 and 2024, including half of Valdespino's parent company and the Vasyma cooperage outright, to secure quality and consistency for whisky that will not be bottled until the 2040s. Read more in 7 Things to Know About the Macallan TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask.

Tip: A series name on a label does not guarantee whisky you have not tasted before. Masters of Photography and most Edition series bottlings hold whisky styles close to Macallan's existing range, while the Harmony Collection, the Red Collection's oldest releases and TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask are built around casks and recipes unique to that bottle.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Edition series and Masters of Photography?

The Edition series changed Macallan's blend for six annual releases between 2015 and 2020, each shaped with a different collaborator. Masters of Photography, running since 2008, generally pairs an existing Macallan bottling with a photographer's images rather than a new recipe.

Does every Harmony Collection release use different whisky?

Yes. Unlike series built around packaging or artwork, each Harmony Collection chapter is matured or finished around a new theme, from Rich Cacao in 2021 through to the coconut releases that closed the series in 2026.

How is The Red Collection different from Fine and Rare?

The Red Collection, launched in 2020, is an ongoing range of officially bottled single malts from 40 Years Old to 78 Years Old and beyond. Fine and Rare, running since 2002, is a collection of individually selected, cask strength single cask bottlings dated back to 1926.

Is the new Macallan TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask a standing release?

It is a limited release rather than an unlimited standing expression, and it follows TIME : SPACE and TIME : SPACE Mastery, both released in 2024 for Macallan's 200th anniversary.

Should collectors try to complete every Macallan limited series?

That is a personal choice rather than a rule. Completeness matters more to some collectors than others, and the series above differ enough in scope, from six Edition bottles to around 60 Fine and Rare vintages, that chasing a full set is a much bigger undertaking for some series than others.
