Macallan 1986 Michael Dillon The Romantica Collection is an exceptionally rare single malt drawn from a single sherry seasoned European oak cask, no. 9925, filled in 1986 and quietly matured in a corner of The Macallan Estate. Bottled in 2026 at 48.6% ABV after four decades of maturation, this edition is limited to just 86 bottles. The Romantica Collection reunites the trio of artists originally commissioned for The Macallan 1926, with Michael Dillon contributing a landscape painting that captures the natural beauty of Easter Elchies Estate, the spiritual home of The Macallan in Speyside. His composition renders the modern distillery as a near-imperceptible architectural form beneath its undulating grass-covered roof, hidden within the contours of the land. The whisky reveals the luminous character of forty years in sherry seasoned oak, opening with dried fruits, candied orange peel, dark chocolate and warming spice over a base of polished antique oak. The palate is deep and silken with rich raisin, walnut, leather and bittersweet cocoa, framed by the unmistakable structure of European oak. The finish is exceptionally long, balancing sweet sherry-soaked fruit with warming spice and a tannic oak signature. As one of only 258 bottles across the complete Romantica Collection, this is a quiet, painterly tribute to the place where cask 9925 has slumbered for forty years.
