The Laphroaig’s Whisky Book Series: Exploring Ian Hunter Legendary Islay Legacy

The Ian Hunter Whisky Book Series

1. Who was Ian Hunter?

Ian Hunter was born at the end of the 19th century on Islay – the island renowned for centuries for its peated whisky. He was a descendant of the Johnston family, founders of Laphroaig in 1815.
When he took over the distillery in 1908, he became the last member of that family to actually run it. This meant that he was not only managing a business but also carrying the weight of his ancestors’ legacy.

The Last of the Johnstons

For Hunter, Laphroaig was never “just a distillery” – it was a symbol of family heritage. He knew that if he failed, not only the brand would disappear, but the entire legacy of the Johnstons. This sense of mission made his approach to running the distillery uncompromising.

2. Ian Hunter’s Biography and Achievements

Ian Hunter was the last member of the Johnston family, founders of the Laphroaig distillery. In 1908, he took the reins and led the distillery for nearly half a century, until his death in 1954. Thanks to him, Laphroaig became the whisky we know today – a globally recognized single malt with an unmistakable character.

Visionary Decisions

From the beginning, Hunter focused on independence and authenticity. At a time when most distilleries were producing mainly for blends, he decided to promote Laphroaig as a single malt whisky. From today’s perspective, it was a visionary decision – risky, but immensely rewarding.

He also invested in Laphroaig’s own malting floors to control the entire production process. To this day, Laphroaig remains one of the few Scottish distilleries that still partially malt their own barley on site, using peat from their own sources.

The biggest revolution, however, was his introduction of American white oak bourbon casks for whisky maturation. This gave Laphroaig its distinctive vanilla and sweetness, perfectly balanced with its heavy, smoky peat – a flavor profile that has become the brand’s signature.

Fighting for Authenticity

Hunter was known as a man of persistence and determination. His story is full of anecdotes that became legends on Islay:

  • The Lagavulin Dispute – when the neighboring distillery tried to recreate Laphroaig’s flavor in their “Malt Mill” facility, Hunter didn’t hesitate to take legal action. Although Lagavulin never matched Laphroaig’s quality, the feud has become part of the whisky folklore of Islay.
  • Prohibition in the USA – thanks to the medicinal qualities of Laphroaig’s peaty character, Hunter managed to have it classified as a “medicinal whisky” and sold in pharmacies by prescription. This clever move kept the brand alive in the U.S. even when the market was closed.
  • Protecting the Kilbride Stream – Hunter purchased land around the vital water source to ensure no one could ever deprive Laphroaig of it. “Without the Kilbride Stream, there is no Laphroaig,” he used to say.
  • His stubborn streak – it was said that during visits from importers, he would test their perseverance by taking them on tours of the distillery in stormy weather, just to see who was truly worthy of working with him.

After his death, the distillery was passed to his secretary, Bessie Williamson, who became the first woman to run a Scottish distillery in the 20th century. Yet it was Hunter who laid the foundations upon which Laphroaig still stands today.

3. The Ian Hunter Story – Book Series

Each bottle comes in an elegant book-shaped case. Every “volume” not only presents an exceptional, decades-matured single malt whisky, but also tells the story of Ian Hunter – his innovations, struggles, and unique character.

4. Legacy

The Ian Hunter Story is not just another collection of luxury whiskies. It is a journey through the life of a man who, through courage, determination, and passion, turned Laphroaig into one of the most distinctive distilleries in the world. Each “volume” reminds us that inside the glass there is more than just whisky – there is history. And in the case of Laphroaig, the history written by Ian Hunter tastes of peat, smoke, and vanilla.

Mentor and Successor

Although Hunter never had children, he found someone to pass the torch to – his secretary and trusted associate, Bessie Williamson. He gradually shared with her his knowledge and responsibilities. Thanks to him, Bessie became the first woman to run a Scottish distillery in the 20th century, and the brand gained a new legend: the woman who kept the peat fire burning through the difficult post-war years.

Ian Hunter’s legacy is deeply rooted in every drop of Laphroaig. His decisions shaped its unmistakable identity, ensuring that the smoky, peaty whisky of Islay would conquer the world and remain a symbol of authenticity.

I am in love with the world of whisky since 2021 after the first films about testing and discovering flavors. the story began with a bottle of Talisker 10, earlier of course brands such as glendifich or johnie walker appeared but it was Talisker that opened my eyes to the diversity of flavors and scents. currently with over 800 whiskies tried and head over heels in love with the climates of islay. finds his flavors in bottles such as ardbeg or lagavulin but I also willingly reach for peated whiskies such as glendronach sweet fruity climates of Speyside.
