The Balvenie unveils the 12-Year-Old Montilla Wine Seasoned Cask, a limited-edition single malt whisky in the Stories range and part of the trilogy “A Collection of Curious Casks.”
This Germany-exclusive release arrives in October 2025 at 47.3% ABV, with two sister bottlings slated for Global Travel Retail and select international markets.
Curated by Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, each bottle comes from a single cask, reinforcing The Balvenie’s focus on craft, provenance, and collector appeal.
Design and Presentation
The Stories series is visually narrated through bespoke illustrations by British artist Andy Lovell.
For this second-year release—Lovell’s eleventh artwork—the label depicts Kelsey McKechnie drawing a sample in Warehouse 24, capturing the human creativity and hands-on artistry behind this limited edition whisky.
The design underscores The Balvenie’s heritage while signaling a modern, exploratory spirit that resonates with enthusiasts and collectors.
Maturation and Flavor Profile + Master Blender’s Statement
Matured for 12 years in a European oak butt seasoned with sweet dessert wine from Montilla, Spain, this release amplifies The Balvenie’s hallmark sweetness with rich vanilla oak and warming spice, delicately layered by fruit notes.
McKechnie explains: “At The Balvenie, tradition is of great importance and key to preserving the quality of our whisky. At the same time, we continually seek new ways to push the boundaries of our distinctive flavor profile and create something extraordinary… a delicate balance of science, art, and a kind of magic that defies haste.”
The trilogy also features a 13YO Refill Port Cask (distilled 2012) and a 20YO Peated Sherry Cask Finish (distilled 2004), while the broader Stories lineup includes the 11YO Hungarian Red Wine Cask, 14YO American Bourbon Barrel, 17YO New Spanish Oak Cask, and 18YO French Pineau Cask.
