Scarabus Single Cask Editions: Rare Islay Bourbon Releases
Introduction & Overview
The Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft kicks off 2026 with the debut of two Scarabus Single Cask Editions—rare Islay single malts matured exclusively in bourbon barrels. These expressions showcase the unique character of single cask whisky from the legendary Islay region, with the exact distillery remaining a mystery. This release offers whisky enthusiasts an exciting opportunity to explore distinctive peated profiles within limited bottlings.
Design & Presentation
The Scarabus Single Cask Editions embrace a minimalist yet elegant packaging style that reflects their exclusivity. Each bottle bears a clear designation of its cask number, highlighting the individuality of every release, while the name Scarabus, rooted in Old Norse meaning "rocky place," evokes the rugged Islay landscape integral to its identity.
Maturation & Flavor Profile
Both editions matured in bourbon barrels, capturing the influence of American oak while preserving Islay’s coastal saline character. The Scarabus Bourbon Barrel - Single Cask Nr.11 offers a powerful, richly peated profile with aromas of campfire ash and toffee apples, finishing long with embers and medicinal peat. In contrast, the Scarabus Bourbon Barrel - Single Cask Nr.12 presents a full-bodied nose featuring toasted marshmallows and roasted nuts, complemented by a palate of lemon zest and salted caramel, closed with sweet spices and maritime smoke.
