New whisky: Ardnahoe Càraid Ìleach Sherry Quarter Cask Pair arrives in Germany as a German-exclusive release

Two new and highly distinctive bottlings from Islay’s Ardnahoe Distillery are now available in Germany via Hanseatic Wine Trading Company Bremen. Released under the name Ardnahoe Càraid Ìleach (“the Islay pair”), this duo is positioned as a world first for Ardnahoe: full-term maturation exclusively in Sherry Quarter Casks—one expression in 100% PX Quarter Casks and one in 100% Oloroso Quarter Casks. Both whiskies unite Islay peat with intense sherry influence and are offered exclusively for the German market in strictly limited quantities.

A world-first maturation: 100% Sherry Quarter Cask expressions

Quarter casks are rarely used for complete maturation due to their small capacity (around 50 litres) and the intensified interaction between spirit and wood. In most cases, they appear as finishing vessels or single-cask experiments. Ardnahoe’s Càraid Ìleach releases take a different path: each whisky is matured entirely in its respective sherry quarter cask type, creating a concentrated, character-driven interpretation of peat meeting sherry.

Design & presentation

Both releases reflect Ardnahoe’s preferred presentation style: bottled at 50.0% ABV, natural colour, and non-chill filtered. The format supports a fuller mouthfeel and preserves aromatic intensity, while the “pair” concept invites collectors and enthusiasts to compare the influence of PX versus Oloroso on Ardnahoe’s peated spirit.

Maturation & flavor profile: peat meets PX sweetness and Oloroso spice

The duo is designed to showcase two complementary sherry styles against a smoky Islay backbone:

  • 100% PX Quarter Cask: a richer, sweeter sherry direction where peat integrates with deeper, darker fruit tones and PX-driven sweetness.
  • 100% Oloroso Quarter Cask: a drier, spiced sherry structure where peat aligns with Oloroso’s savoury, warming complexity.

Across the pair, the intended profile centers on a refined, sweet and rich core of dark fruits, followed by a warm, pleasantly long, smoky finish—while PX and Oloroso shape whether the emphasis leans more toward sweetness or spice.

Cask selection & collaboration

The concept for two sherry quarter cask maturations reportedly emerged from an Islay trip in spring, where the casks were tasted and selected by Hanseatic Wine Trading Company together with Ardnahoe’s owners, Andrew and Scott Laing. The decisive factor was the compelling interplay between Ardnahoe peat and an intense sherry aroma—strong enough to justify these rare whiskies as limited special editions for Germany.

Release & availability

Ardnahoe Càraid Ìleach is available now in German specialist shops and is marketed as a German-exclusive, limited edition pair:

  • Full cask maturation: 100% Oloroso Quarter CaskRRP €109.90
  • Full cask maturation: 100% PX Quarter CaskRRP €109.90

Both releases are bottled at 50.0% ABV, presented with natural colour and non-chill filtration.

Conclusion

With Càraid Ìleach, Ardnahoe puts a clear spotlight on the intersection of Islay peat and full-term sherry quarter cask maturation—a rare approach that prioritizes intensity, clarity of cask influence, and side-by-side comparability. For the German market, this “Islay pair” offers a focused and collectable way to explore how PX sweetness and Oloroso spice can each reshape a peated Ardnahoe single malt.
